The European Commission president has met with China's ambassador to the European Union to discuss EU-China relations. Manuel Barrroso says the two sides have broad potential for further cooperation.
Barroso visited Guan Chengyuan at his residence, where the two officials held cordial and extensive talks on China-EU ties.
Manuel Barrroso said: "On behalf on the European Union, I reiterate that we are willing to deepen relations with China..."
After their talks, the Chinese ambassador told CCTV the two sides will enhance their relationship to a higher level this year.
Guan Chengyuan said: "This year, Chinese and EU leaders will have their 9th summit in Finland. It's very likely they will sign a new cooperation partnership treaty and make an important decision. This will mean that China-EU relations have reached a mature and fruitful stage."
The China-EU summit was initiated in 1998 by then Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji and British Prime Minister Tony Blair. It is the highest level of regular political dialogue between China and the EU.
