Abbas and Hamas leader Meshaal agree to work to avert civil war

Javier Solana, EU high representative, said, "The international community, other countries from the region should accompany the process, whenever is started, but the fundamental solution is the responsibility of the Israelis and the Palestinians. The Europeans, you know, are willing to help, to accompany the process, to help whenever is necessary, but the responsibility will be of the parties."

Solana has been underscoring the EU's commitment to the region and expressing support for direct talks between Palestinian President Abbas and Hamas.
