Ban Ki-moon said, "I fully understand Israel's legitimate security concerns, having gone through some parts of Israel by helicopter today I came to better appreciate the security concerns facing Israel."
At the news conference on Monday, Ban urged Israel and the Palestinians to resume peace negotiations, calling Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas "a genuine partner for peace".
The Israeli Foreign Minister said the Arab peace initiative from 2002 has positive elements. But Tzipi Livni added that Israel was not satisfied with other elements in it.
But Ban says he's still hopeful about prospects for peace between Israel and the Palestinians.
