FM: Bush-Abe summit must "take right path"

Green house emissions

The Foreign Ministry spokesman yesterday repeated China's commitment to fighting climate change, maintaining that developed countries should take major responsibility for accumulated greenhouse emissions and take the lead in helping to solve the problem.

Liu made the remarks in response to a news report citing the International Energy Agency as saying that China will overtake the United States as the world's biggest source of greenhouse gases this year.

Liu said China has attached great importance to the issue and is willing to take concrete measures to decrease emissions.

Internal affair

Liu said China is looking forward to Canadian Foreign Minister Peter MacKay's upcoming visit, adding that it is unclear whether the issue of Huseyin Celil would be addressed during MacKay's talks with his Chinese counterpart Li Zhaoxing.

"We hope the visit can play a positive role in the improvement of China-Canada relations," Liu said.

"We believe the case is China's internal affair and in essence relates to anti-terrorism and has no connection with Canada," Liu said, hoping that the Canadian side will not interfere with China's internal affairs.

Huseyin Celil was convicted of the crimes of separating China and organizing, leading and participating in terrorist groups and organizations.
