China launches nationwide energy-saving campaign

Fan Xuecheng of Gov't Office Admin., State Council said, "If this technology is used nationwide, the gas it saved will be enough for the whole Beijing city using 8 years. From this example, I think government energy saving should start from minor areas."

All of the central government's 800,000 light bulbs will be replaced by energy saving ones. This move alone will save 11 million kilowatts of power every year.

Big businesses are also at the forefront of the energy saving campaign. At Beijing's biggest beer factory, there are very little gas emissions and almost no waste water.

Previously, all the vapor from the fermentation process was emitted from chimneys, but now it is recycled. This saves 10 tons of coal every day.

All waste water is recycled 5 times at this factory. The average worldwide rate of water consumption to produce one ton of beer is 8 tons. But this company only uses 6 and a half tons.

Li Fucheng, Director General of Beijing Yanjing Beer Co.,said, "All the waste from production is actually resources that have been misused. Everything can be recycled and used again. With full use of these resources, we now can save 8 thousand tons of coal every year."

Over 1,000 major energy consuming companies have joined the campaign and set their own energy saving goals. If all of their goals are realized, the country could save 100 million tons of coal annually.
