The China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda has announced updated information on the situation of pandas in Sichuan. |
Li Desheng, Deputy Chief China Conservation & Research CTR. for Giant Pandas, said, "Accommodations for the pandas have been restored to the condition before the earthquake. The pandas have recovered both physically and mentally."
The 7 pandas currently at Wolong are living in enclosures constructed in a safe zone.
And there's other good news 9 of the 53 transferred pandas have given birth to new cubs.
Li Desheng said, "All the pregnant pandas were transferred to the Ya'an Base. The happiest thing is that the first twin pandas after the earthquake were born this July. 9 pandas have given birth to 14 cubs in all since the quake. Those babies have brought us new hope."
It's estimated there are fewer than 16-hundred pandas left in the wild, with around 250 in captivity.
But even with the problems caused by the earthquake, Chinese researchers still believe there is time to save the endangered species from extinction.
