In Chicago, President-elect Barack Obama laid a wreath at the Soldiers Memorial near Soldier Field.

He was accompanied by Iraq war veteran Tammy Duckworth, who lost both her legs in combat. She is the Illinois governor's veterans affairs director.

The United States first recognized November 11th as a day to honor veterans in 1938, the 20th anniversary of the official end of World War I.

In 1954 it was changed Armistice Day to Veterans Day to include those who served in all wars.
