Israel releases 224 Palestinian prisoners

Initially, Israel was to free 227 Palestinians.

But, the Israeli Prison Service said only 224 were freed, and the release of 3 others was still under review.

18 of the prisoners were to be released to the Gaza Strip.

Fawzi Barhoum, Hamas Spokesman, said, "We welcome the release of any Palestinian prisoner that goes back to his home and family. This is not a favor that the Israelis are doing since it is the right of the prisoners to go back to their homes and to live free like the rest of the residents of the area."

Israel is holding peace talks with Abbas' government. Most of the prisoners are affiliated with his Fatah movement.
