Taiwan's financial department has asked the island's legislative branch to consider allowing mainland tourists to use the mainland's UnionPay credit cards in Taiwan.

The plan is part of efforts to improve the Taiwan economy through deeper cooperation with the mainland. The talks between the two sides are still ongoing, and aim to make the UnionPay's network available in Taiwan as soon as July.

UnionPay connects most of the major mainland banks, and entered Hong Kong and Macao in 2004. Outside the mainland, UnionPay cards are accepted in more than 30 countries, competing with global companies like Visa and MasterCard.
