Tibet gears up for Serfs Emancipation celebration

Tibet is gearing up to celebrate its first-ever "Serfs Emancipation Day" which will take place on Saturday. |
Lhasa mayor Doje Cezhug said, "From countryside to city, we're welcoming the arrival of this day with a diversity of activities."
Teachers are also hoping that the students can learn about the tremendous changes the older generations experienced.
A Lhasa student said, "We have opportunities to study. The school facilities are good. We must cherish what we have already achieved."
According to official statistics, the illiteracy rate among young and middle-aged adults was 95 percent over 50 years ago. This figure is now way down to less than 5 percent.
