Backgrounder: Talks between leaders of ARATS and SEF

June 2008, ARATS president Chen Yunlin and SEF chairman Chiang Pin-kun started their talks, after a suspension lasting nearly 10 years. The two sides signed agreements on weekend chartered flights and tourism.

NOVEMBER 3RD, 2008

Last November, ARATS president Chen Yunlin led a delegation to visit the SEF in Taipei. During their first ever meeting in Taipei,the two agreed on issues concerning direct sea transport, increased chartered flights, direct postal services and food safety cooperation. The agreements were expected to end a situation that has prevailed since 1949, which required air and sea movements between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan to go through a third place.

APRIL 18TH, 2009

In April this year, representatives from the two sides met to prepare the third round of talks of the two leaders. Topics on their agenda include regular flights, financial cooperation, legal support and working together to tackle crime.
