As the case of other ancient peoples, Chinese folk songs originate in primitive hunting, ritual, mating and herding activities. In their long history of development and in the course of adapting themselves to the social functions and environment, Chinese folk songs have gradually formed themselves into a series of artistic categories, such as "Haozi" or "work songs" and "fishermen's songs." The former is common all over China while the latter covers all the aspects of boat and net handling. Chinese folk songs mainly have the following characteristics: a long history with rich contents, an abundant variety of styles and forms, and concise techniques and language.
