A small yard stands at a corner of a bustling city. In it lives 80－year－old Chen Shirong and his family. His wife has passed away, leaving Chen Shirong to finish the duty of supporting all of their five children into adulthood. Except the elder daughter Wenjing and the youngest son Wenbao, all the other three children, the eldest son Wenhai, the middle son Wentao, and the youngest daughter Wenhui, live together in the yard with their father.
Wenhai is a taxi driver and is busy all year round. His son is preparing for the college entrance exam, but the fee is nowhere to be found. Now his wife, Xiumei, has been laid－off from her job. Wentao is a timid man, married to a selfish and shrewish wife, Chunfang.
At weekends, the family return to the yard for a reunion as usual. Disliking Yin Baolan, Wenjing's husband, Chen shirong transfers his annoyance to his eldest daughter. Wentao comes back drunk. He lost his job too.
