CCTV presents a war epic drama entitled Breaking Through the Encirclement on the Central Plains, which describes a heroic and bloody battle in 1946 unveiling the beginning of the Liberation War led by the Communist Party of China against the Kuomintang regime.
When World War II ended victoriously in 1945, the Chinese people all hoped they could return to a peaceful life. But the Kuomintang government was determined to annihilate the CPC's troops. In 1946, a force of 30,000 Kuomintang troops encircled 60,000 soldiers of Division 5 in the central plains. In this situation, CPC leaders made diplomatic efforts to avoid a war while at the same time raced against time to make preparation for the war. On June 26, Kuomintang troops launched a massive offensive. Led by Li Xiannian, Zheng Weisan and Wang Zhen, the CPC's soldiers broke the barricade successfully, and established new revolutionary bases. After that, the power balance began to title in favor of the CPC side, changing the future of China.
People should not forget those brave soldiers who shed their blood for a bright future. On hearing that a TV drama will be made to show this part of history to the people, many generals and military officers of Division 5 who were still alive volunteered to act as advisors, offering memories and materials, and expressing their opinions of everything from the script to the dialogue.
The drama is made by August 1st Film Studio, which specializes in producing war-related films, and Hubei Economic TV Station, winner of many national prizes. Artistic director Wei Lian and director Shi Wei, winners of many national awards, are both known for their film and TV works dealing with military subjects. Their credits include The Decision Battle, The Turning Point and The Menglianggu Battle. They don't swerve from violent war scenes because they believe this is part of the Chinese people's history and we should not forget it.
Another characteristic is evident in the high educational background of the cast. Li Xiannian's part is played by Xu Ping, a teacher of performing arts who has a doctorate degree. His own academic career fits Li's educated background very well. The heroine, Anny Mei, a beautiful and intelligent war reporter, is played by Xi Yuli, a senior performing arts student. Gao Tianhao who plays Mei's lover and Li's official in this drama is also a new graduate from university. The actor who plays the American lieutenant colonel who is emotionally involved in Mei is also a master in performing arts from New York University.
