This week, CCTV One starts to air its multi-million RMB, 38-part series, "A Family of Books". The massive production presents a vivid panoramic view of the life and work of China's intellectuals in the 1980's.
Shot by a veteran film director and packed with a sparkling array of China's top-notch actors -- the TV series "A Family of Books" revolves around a family of intellectuals in the 1980's, a decade of fast-change in the wake of the catastrophe of the "Cultural Revolution."
It is a story about the love and hate, ups and downs of a college professor and his family, friends and colleagues as China is plunges headlong into the reform and opening-up program of the era.
The twenty plus main cast play out the clashes, both in lifestyle and in values, between two generations of Chinese intellectuals. The production also provides a perspective on the progress China made through the academic split between an old economist and his younger successor.
The 38-part drama started on Monday night on prime time CCTV-1 and will run for the next couple of weeks.
