Puyi Ascended the Throne

In the night of November 13, 1908, that is, the 20th day of the 10th month of the 34th year of the Guangxu reign, a group of unusual people hurried out of the Forbidden City and headed for the residence of Prince Chun. They brought Empress Dowager Cixi´s decree that Prince Chun´s eldest son was to succeed the throne.

Woman Warrior of Jianhu Lake

From Cixi to Longyu, for as long as half a century, the Qing Empire was in the hands of two women. Nevertheless, that didn´t mean any improvement to women´s social status. In early 20th century, a legendary life of a woman shed light on the liberation of Chinese women. In 1904, 29-year-old Qiu Jin made a courageous decision.

Huanghuagang Uprising

It was a very heroic uprising. Preparation work met with untold difficulties and their plans were disrupted. They had to postpone the uprising again and again. In the end, Huang Xing made the decision to launch the uprising. Over 1,000 youths took part in the tragic battle. With the big disparity in strength, the outcome was easy to see. Tong Meng Hui lost all its important members. Seventy-two martyrs were buried in Huanghuagang alone. Lin Juemin was one of them.

Wuchang Uprising

After the Huanghuagang Uprising was suppressed, the New Army became the one armed force the Qing government relied on for its rule. It had spent 10 years in building up this most advanced army of China of that time.

The Revolution of 1911

The smoke of gunpowder had dispersed. Wuhan was overwhelmed by joy. The success of Wuchang Uprising shocked the Qing court, which quickly ordered Beiyang Army to press forward to Wuhan. This was the prelude to a real armed contest.

Abdication of Qing Court

In 1911, the atmosphere in Beijing became very tense when provinces proclaimed their independence one after another. All kinds of stories spread in the city. In appearance, the Forbidden City retained the serenity of an empire; but its masters sensed their approaching end. Prince Regent Zai Feng was at the end of his tether.
