Cat and Mouse to play big screen

A Hong Kong action-comedy "Cat and Mouse" has been enlisted to boost the Chinese Lunar New Year film offerings, which has already been bombarded by "Hero" and "Harry Potter 2" and a host of others. When the light-hearted comedy hits the big screen, we'll see if it can lure mainland audiences into the cinemas.

Starring silver screen idols Andy Lau and Cecelia Cheung and multiple award winner Anthony Wong, "Cat and Mouse" is a riveting costume comedy loosely based on the popular Chinese novel "Qi Xia Wu Yi." It's a Song Dynasty story of Judge Bao and his group of heroic helpers, who together solve cases and catch criminals galore.

In the original story, Zhan Zhao, nicknamed Imperial Cat is constantly at loggerheads with Bai Yutang -- Multicolored Mouse, a Robin Hood figure who assists Judge Bao from the other side of the law.

Their traditional feuding undergoes a modern twist in this hilariously bent film, where Bai Yutang is turned into a cross-dressing heroine played by Cecilia Cheung with a crush on Zhan Zhao played by Andy Lau.

Mainland cinemas are confident this Hong Kong traveller can go the distance in the New Year film market.

"A star-studded cast and a great entertaining subject. These advantages wrapped up in Cat and Mouse will make it blast an unstoppable whirlwind into the new year market," said Yu Dong, head manager of Beijing Bona Film Release Company.

The Chinese Lunar New Year is a traditional time for movies to cash in on the golden market. With more and more Hong Kong films heading north to the mainland, film-makers here now have a profitable lesson about marketing and promotional strategies to draw on.
