Dumpling contest conveys the festive message

Dumplings, jiaozi in Chinese, are pretty topical at the moment, given that they're the traditional fare for Spring Festival. In the seaside city of Qingdao, in Shandong province, 16 top dumpling makers competed in a special contest on Monday (Jan. 20).

A festive stage was the backdrop for these culinary artists. Actually these 16 people are the finalists from many competitions. Taste and shape are the most important two criteria. And these jiaozi aren't just your usual dumpling, filled with delicious fillings like seafood.

Eating jiaozi for the traditional New Year's Eve family dinner is something that's been done in China for generations. It's especially traditional in northern China, where families all have a hand in doing the dumplings. In fact for most people the process of making them is more important than the result.

In this contest, gold and silver went to the fish, then the sea cucumber.
