Spring Festival travel frenzy set to begin

Travel agencies all over China are ready to usher in another golden season of tourism. During the upcoming Spring Festival holiday period, millions of families are expected to "get away", celebrating the Lunar New Year with travel.

Statistics show that Southeast Asian countries, as well as the Hong Kong and Macao SARs are still the most-favored destinations for a lot of Chinese tourists.

Jiangsu Overseas Travel Agency reports that the Hong Kong and Macao SARs are the N0. 1 choice for people in the city of Nanjing. It's estimated that more than 200 people will travel to Hong Kong or Macao each day during the 7-day Lunar New Year vacation period.

In contrast, many Shanghai citizens have decided to avoid the peak travel time, trying to avoid the rush in transport and accommodation, by leaving for their vacations or home bases several days before, or after, the festival celebration.

Meanwhile, a world of ice and snow can be a wonderland where many tourists make the most of their time-off. No wonder the crystal sculpture and engravings in northeast China's Harbin have become top picks for celebrating the holiday.

Local travel services in Harbin are already ahead of their competitors in making festival reservations. During the week-long holiday period, there'll be more than 40 charter flights from home and abroad to the city, making Harbin one of the premier tourist destinations in China.

But regular tours are no longer "fresh" to young people eager for new fashions. Many young backpackers will just pack up their gear and go camping for the Lunar New Year.

Their itinerary may sound alternative, but it's rich in cultural experience. For these young people, hiking along ancient and long-deserted cultural sites, as well as exploring natural preservation zones are the most relaxing and rejuvenating ways to embrace the new year.
