A festive atmosphere has swept across the country with plans for the upcoming Spring Festival, China's most important holiday of the year.

In central China's Shaanxi province over 1,000 people, from the elderly to small children, have gathered together to welcome the coming Lunar New Year with drums and gongs. The powerful sounds of traditional instruments add to the excitement and hopes for a prosperous new year.

The people of Ruicheng city in Shanxi province are organizing a special ice-carrying celebration. The person who carries the heaviest block of ice from the Yellow River is the winner. The event combines local characteristics with residents' best wishes for the coming new year.

Children at an international school in east China's Shanghai city are also celebrating. Their school has been decorated with lanterns and children plan to sing traditional Chinese songs. While many are from different countries, they say they are excited to learn about Chinese culture.

Along with new year celebrations, China's first museum of living sea shells and coral opened to the public on Sunday (Jan. 26) in Beihai city in southern China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The exhibition is divided into seven parts, offering vivid ecological views of sea.

Red lanterns were at the top of the shopping list for most of people in Wenzhou in eastern China's Zhejiang province. Here, Wuma street has been decked out in 2003 red lanterns in honor of the year of the sheep.

Zhaoqing city in southern China's Guangdong province is full of loud noises as it greets the year of the sheep. Images of the wooly animal can be seen everywhere in city parks.

In Yinchuan, in western China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, an ice lantern and ice sculpture exhibition has attracted a large number of enthusiastic visitors. The sculpture of a sheep has predictably been a focus of the exhibition. An ice sculpture depicting a mini panorama of Yinchuan has also attracted large crowds.
