The upcoming Spring Festival has sent a shiver of excitement throughout the country. The influx of foreign culture may impinge on our daily lives, but when any red-letter day comes, it's still the traditional Chinese culture that dominates.

Symbolizing family gatherings and friendship, the festival Chinese Knot, with its intricate artistic design, has long been a favorite. And this gigantic one decorating an apartment building in Xuzhou city of Jiangsu province only hints at its tremendous popularity. The knot has become something of a landmark. The seven-meter long and four-meter wide handicraft is made from over 300 meters of red rope.

Despite the vagaries of fashion, Shanghai citizens have decided to stick with traditional Chinese clothes for the Lunar New Year. Local tailor shops, catering to different pocketbooks, are doing a booming business with many a citizen having their new year clothes made to order. Even choosy customers will be able to find something in over 1,000 patterns that pack the shelves.

Also in East China, 66 Guqin fans gathered in Nanjing city to play their beloved instrument. And, nine youngsters won bravoes for their performance on another ancient instrument not often seen, the Guzheng.

At Spring Festival, couplets are often pasted on doors. Calligraphers of Fujian province extended their festive greetings with dynamic powerful strokes in a couplets giveaway activity.
