The Yuanmingyuan might no longer be a blight on Chinese tradition now that a masterpiece depicting this former royal garden has made its way back to its rightful home. The silk painting called "40 scenes of Yuanmingyuan" was unveiled to the public on the morning of Jan.8.
The painting is 28 meters long and 38 centimeters high and is the longest silk painting in the world. The painting is housed in a red-colored sculpted drum, symbolizing the world in peace. There will be 2004 copies of the painting made, and the first will be displayed in the National Museum. In some expert's eyes, the silk painting of the "40 scenery of Yuanmingyuan" ranks as a national treasure and is of a profound historical value.
The National Museum spent a huge amount of money buying back the original painting from the National Library of France. Now visitors will have a new opportunity to appreciate their ancestor's splendid royal garden.
