For every Chinese TV audience, there is one type of program that guarantees a barrel of laughs. It's the short sketch that's a staple in annual feast of the CCTV Spring Festival gala. However, this year, Chinese comic artists tried something new, to extend their own repertoire and test the audience response.
Short sketches were once the basis for many fun filled nights for Chinese people. As a way of lending drama and humor to hot social issues, the short sketch has been a trademark performance at parties for many years. But as humor has developed in different directions, and emerged in new forms, getting the messages across is posing more challenges to comic artists.
Ying Zhuang, who has made a name for himself both directing and performing in China’s sitcoms appeared at the rehearsal of the 2004 CCTV Spring Festival gala. This time, he acted in a traditional short sketch, playing the role of a bride at a wedding ceremony.
Humor comes in a variety of fashions, but the goal is always the same to make people laugh, and maybe think a little. So you don't want people feeling too familiar with the old form, or getting jaded. When people want to laugh they want a fresh look, and they're not too concerned whether it boasts a high artistic value or not.
The Spring Festival gala has always served as an incubator for new and creative talent. And with luck, this year will continue to produce plenty of fresh experience.
