| Monkey King starts year in Taiwan |

The Year of the Monkey has just begun, and the royal simian of Chinese culture, Sun Wukong, is already on the road. "The Monkey King" will be staged by the Quanzhou Marionette Art Group in Taipei.
Ten years ago, the nationally－acclaimed Quanzhou Marionette Art Group paid its first visit to Taiwan. This time, the folk art group from southern Fujian Province is bringing the "Monkey King" to the island.
The puppeteers met with their Taiwan counterpart, the Jiuge Children's Art Troupe, on the night of Jan.28. The Monkey King and his Taiwan fellow puppet, Liaoran, put on a little show, to the delight of both the hosts and guests.
Unlike most performances where puppet masters are hidden behind the curtain, Quanzhou puppet masters are present on stage. They stand on a tall box behind the marionettes, pulling the strings. This gives them and their figures more freedom of movement.
The "Monkey King" will be twirling his golden rod in Taipei for three straight nights from Jan.31.
