Egypt is home to one of the ancient world's four great civilizations. The pyramids, the sphinx and numerous treasures speak of ancient wisdom.

Established in 1858, the Egyptian National Museum was moved to Cairo's Liberation Square in 1902. There are over 100,000 treasures on display in the museum, most dating back 4,000 years. Besides the toys, cosmetics, and other articles used daily by the ancient Egyptians, the well preserved mummies are the museum's biggest attractions.

Straddling both Africa and Arabia, Egypt is proud of its heritage. The capital, Cairo, is one of the world's oldest cities and also the biggest metropolis in Africa. Some of Cairo's mosques are regarded as the jewels in the crown of Muslim architecture. All this makes Egypt a hot tourist spot. Its fascinating history and splendid culture attract millions of tourists every year.

The pyramids are still one of the seven wonders of the world. They were built as tombs for the Egyptian pharaohs and were designed to protect the bodies of the dead kings forever. The biggest of the pyramids is the Great Pyramid built for King Khufu in 2550 BC. The second biggest is the Giza Pyramid complex built by King Khafra, followed in size by King Menkaura's tomb. Over 80 pyramids were built from 2700 to 1680 BC. But despite their age, the huge and mysterious pyramids still fascinate to this day.
