The Lantern Festival marks the end of the New Year's holiday. It has been celebrated since the Han Dynasty, about 2,000 years ago, and it's as fun as ever. People still carry lanterns through the streets at night and watch Lion or Dragon dances under the full moon. Families still get together to solve riddles, set off firecrackers and fill up on Yuanxiao, the festive dumplings symbolizing family reunion.
Kerosine or candle lanterns may have made place for electric lanterns, but people still look forward to the family reunion and Yuanxiao dinner to reminisce on the traditions and lifestyle of the past.
Daoxiangcun means "the village of fragrant rice". It's one of China's most prestigious festival food suppliers. Yuanxiao are balls made of glutinous rice flour, produced in the company's squeaky clean workshops.
Obviously, Yuanxiao gets its name from the festival itself. Made of sticky rice flour filled with various sweet and other taste stuffings, these round treats symbolize family unity, completeness and happiness.
Old traditions are re-emerging as new trends on the global market. And Daoxiangcun is looking forward to selling its products to overseas Chinese. But that still depends on governmental support and customer's appetites.
