China has promised to help correct regional imbalances in the number of listed world heritage sites. During a news conference on World Heritage Site protection in China, government officials said China would work more closely with other members of the World Heritage Committee. The aim of the cooperative effort is to support those countries with no, or few, entries on the World Heritage list to get registered.
In Jun.28 session of the UNESCO's World Heritage Committee will be held in Suzhou, a picturesque city in east China's Jiangsu province. China will take this opportunity to help address regional imbalances in the number of listed world heritage sites.
From a regional perspective, less than 20 percent of the over 750 world heritage sites are located in the Asia-Pacific region.
Other issues highlighted during the press conference were the need to raise awareness of intangible heritage, as well as the need to improve management expertise of world heritage sites. The prevention of the relic smuggling was also listed as an important goal.
Last year, China launched a nationwide campaign to fight against illegal and destructive activities involving national scenic spots and historic sites.
China now boasts 29 sites on the World Heritage List, ranking it as the world's third largest protector of Heritage sites.
