The Best Animated Short Film category of the Academy Awards is often overlooked, but this year's nominations are worth paying attention to. An extraordinarily diverse group of animated short films are vying for the award.

This year's nominees include "Harvie Krumpet" from Melodrama Pictures. The wry story of a tormented man has already won a number of awards for its directing and producing team.

Veteran animator Chris Hinton from Canada earned a nomination for "Nibbles." Frantic line drawings tell the story of mad consumers on a family fishing trip.

The Walt Disney Company has rediscovered and restored the long-lost animated short "Destino", created by Spanish surrealist Salvador Dali and Disney founder Walt Disney. The six and a half minute short is also nominated.

Roy Disney shares his Oscar nomination with Dominique Monfery, the director of Disney's Paris animation studios.

"Boundin'" is a vision from director Bud Luckey, also the short's lead animator, composer, writer, and narrator. Lucke reflects on his hometown's beauty and independence as the main character, a sheep, grows up.

The Academy Awards take place in Los Angeles Feb. 29.
