China's first navy family museum has recently been established at number 48 Zhuzifang Street, in the southeastern Chinese city of Fuzhou. This is also the former residence of Fang Boqian, one of the men whose life the museum celebrates.
Fang Boqian was one of China's first domestically trained generals. He was the captain of the Jiyuan Fleet of the Qing Dynasty's Imperial Chinese Navy, which was founded in 1888. After Fang Boqian, nine outstanding navy men came from his family. Six fought bloody battles against Japanese invaders during the War of Resistance Against Japan from 1937 to 1945.
The master room of Fang Boqian's house holds actual items used by the general, including his furniture, manuscripts and pocket watch. The living room functions as an exhibition hall. On display are 64r pictures from Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895, and also articles written in recent years about the general.
Fang Yong, who is 78 years old and grandson of Fang Boqian, has appointed himself the curator of the family museum.
