"Lord of the Rings" sweeps Oscars
   CCTV.COM   2004-03-02 13:03:37

The epic journey of a raggedy gang of humans, hobbits, wizards, dwarves and elves hoisted the fantasy genre to Oscar glory as "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" won a record-typing 11 Oscars, sweeping every category in which it was nominated, including best picture. Other top Oscars played out predictably, with front-runners claiming all four acting trophies, the first for each.

The directing Oscar went to Peter Jackson, overlord of arguably the biggest undertaking in cinema history, the simultaneous filming of J. R. R Tolkien's Middle-earth trilogy: "The Fellowship of the Ring," "The Two Towers" and "The Return of the King".

Sean Penn took the best-actor prize as a vengeful father in "Mystic River." The actor, who skipped the Oscars when previously nominated for "Dead Man Walking", "Sweet and Lowdown" and "I'm Sam," showed up and received graciously.

Charlize Theron won best actress as serial killer Aileen Wuornos in "Monster." The classic beauty was virtually unrecognizable, packing on 30 pounds and concealing her cover-girl beauty behind false teeth, splotchy makeup and dark contact lenses.

Oscars for supporting performances went to Tim Robbins as a man emotionally hamstrung by childhood trauma in "Mystic River." And Renee Zellweger was honored for her portrayal of a hardy Confederate survivor in American Civil War epic "Cold Mountain."

"Return of the King" matched the record 11 Oscar wins of "Titanic" and "Ben-Hur" and became only the third movie to sweep every category in which it was nominated.

Jackson also shared the adapted-screenplay Oscar with co-writers Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens. "Return of the King" also won for song, musical score, visual effects, editing, makeup, art direction, costume design and sound mixing.

Sophia Coppola's Oscar victory for original screenplay for "Lost in Translation" made her family the second clan of three-generation Oscar winners. Her father is five-time Oscar winner Francis Ford Coppola and her grandfather, Carmine Coppola, won for musical score on "The God Father Two."

And the foreign language film of the year went to Canadian director Denys Arcand's "Barbarian Invasions."

Writer-director Blake Edward, husband of Julie Andrews, received the honorary Lifetime Achievement Award for five decades of writing, directing and producing an extraordinary body of work for the screen.

The Oscars, given out by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, are the US film industry's top honors.

This year's Oscar ceremony was held with high style as it revived the spirit of celebration after two years, when it was shadowed by the 2001 Sep. 11 terrorist attacks and by the US war on Iraq last year.
