Colombian Workers on Strike Against Fuel Price Hike
TUE, FEB 19, 2002
Colombian transportation workers began on early Monday an indefinite strike across the country to protest fuel price hikes as well as the poor coverage of anti-terrorism insurance.
The strike involves 89,000 trucks, with an estimated 540,000 tons of cargo being affected. In the Buenavuntura port of Pacific Ocean alone, strikers blocked the movement of 30,000 tons of cargo.
Workers earlier promised not to block roads as in former protests. Interior Minister Armando Estrada said he believed the strikers would not press others to join them, and that they would not affect the free movement of road traffic.
Colombian army and police are on alert against any possible troubles on roads.
The Colombian Truck-Drivers Association (ACC) organized the protest after talks with the transportation authorities failed to reach any agreement. An ACC spokesman said the strike "is irreversible and in the end the country will lose."
