The United States on Monday condemned the weekend kidnapping of Colombian presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt and reiterated U.S. support for the Colombian government in its war on rebels.
"It's another very tragic example of a pattern of behavior by the FARC (the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) in which the organization has committed over 100 terrorist acts, including the murder of 20 civilians in last week's hijacking of a civilian airliner," State Department spokesman Richard Boucher told reporter at a news briefing.
He said activities like these have led to the understandable decision by the Colombian President Andres Pastrana to suspend the peace talks.
"We will continue to support the Colombian government at this difficult time and we strongly condemn this kidnapping and call for her immediate release," Boucher said.
