While some regions have been hit by floods, drought has been worsening in south China since mid-July, according to the National Headquarters for Flood Control and Drought Relief. High temperatures have been hovering over most of Fujian Province and southern parts of Jiangxi, Hunan and Zhejiang provinces. Less rainfall, high evaporation and increasing consumption of water have aggravated the drought in these areas.
The drought has damaged crops on more than 3 million hectares of farmland in these areas. And more than 5 million people in rural areas and over 2 million head of livestock have had difficulty getting access to drinking water. In central and southern Hunan, Chenzhou and Yongzhou are the worst hit cities. More than three million people have joined together to fight the drought. In Jiangxi's Ganzhou City, artificial rainfall has been produced on 8 occasions.
