An earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale hit Dayao county in southwest China's Yunnan province on Monday. The earthquake in Yunnan further indicates that China is going through a quake-prone period. After analyzing the frequent quakes that have struck western China during the past few years, Chinese seismologists have drawn this conclusion.

Zhang Xiaodong, deputy director of the Analyzing and Forecasting Center under the State Seismological Bureau, noted that since 1988, China has entered a quake-active era. In late 1990s, quakes measuring above six on the Richter scale struck western parts of Shanxi and Hebei provinces. In 2001, a strong quake of 8.1 on the Richter scale hit the Kunlun Mountains in Qinghai province.

On February 24th this year, a quake of 6.4 hit Bachu and Jiashi in Xinjiang Autonomous Region. And on July 21st, a quake of 6.2 rocked Dayao county in Yunnan province. The seismologist holds that the frequency of these large scale quakes has shown that China is experiencing a quake prone era. He mentioned that China is at the juncture of the Pacific Plate, the North American Plate, the Eurasian Plate, and the Indian Plate. Affected by the movements of these plates, China is the most quake-prone area in the world. The recent quakes have verified this.
