Over thirty foreign and Chinese experts on cultural preservation have been meeting in Luoyang City, in central China's Henan Province, to discuss how best to protect the Longmen Grottoes.

The experts blame weather erosion and human encroachment on the area as the main problems threatening the world heritage site. The experts are from UNESCO and the group that oversees preservation of the Forbidden City in Beijing. They are spending three days at the grottoes doing research and drafting plans.

The Longmen Grottoes are 1,500 years old. They are one of the three largest collections of Buddhist statues and carvings in China. UNESCO added the site to its World Heritage list last year.
