An international conference on revitalizing Asian tourism has opened in Hong Kong. It's the largest international meeting Hong Kong has hosted since the region's recent removal from the list of SARS-affected areas.

Long Yongtu, head of the Boao Forum for Asia, said the conference aimed to rekindle confidence in Asian tourism and develop guidelines for crisis management and co-ordination.

Over 1,000 high level tourism officials, professionals, experts, and scholars from nearly 30 countries and regions are attending the two-day conference.

On Monday, participants discussed the roles of government and industry in revitalizing Asian tourism, as well as the promotion of intra-regional tourism in the Asia Pacific region.

Long Yongtu said the conference provides the region an opportunity not only to discuss SARS and tourism, but also to discuss how the international community could strengthen cooperation when faced with such crises.

Long Yongtu said, "Passenger flow through airports is an indicator of international tourist levels. The recent resurgence of passenger flow in airports in the region shows that the tourism industry is experiencing a rapid rebound. We should do more to further promote it.〞

Long said he is very pleased that Hong Kong was chosen as the location for this conference, adding that Hong Kong after SARS is an attractive destination, and hundreds of thousands of tourists will come back to Hong Kong and Asia soon.
