Dalian is putting the final touches on preparations for the upcoming Asia-European Meeting of economic ministers. China's Minister of Commerce, Lu Fuyuan, says the ASEM meeting will be the largest and most important conference to be held in China since the end of the SARS epidemic. The discussions will be held from July 22 to 24.
Dalian has mobilized a huge task force to prepare the northeastern port city for the meeting. Eighteen working groups have been set up to provide publicity, communications, security, medical and other services, and logistics.
Discussion is expected to focus on the new-round of WTO negotiations, regional economic cooperation and global economic development.
Chinese Minister of Commerce Lu Fuyuan said, "As a new WTO member, China has worked hard to take part in the new round of talks. The Finance Ministers who are coming to this meeting have agreed to discuss these issues."
The forum is the fifth of its kind. The Asia-Europe meeting brings together 15 European Union nations, the EU committee, 7 members of ASEAN, and China, Japan and South Korea. Previous meetings were held in Japan, Germany, Vietnam and Denmark.
