China feels power shortage
   CCTV.COM   2003-07-18 15:07:43
As China swelters in the summer heat, a spokesman for the State Power Regulatory Commission said grids are becoming overloaded and the situation isn't expected to improve next year either.

Tan Rongyao, spokesman for the commission, said the peak period for summer power consumption has arrived and the power grids in China's eastern and southern areas are feeling the pressure. Statistics showed that in June, the East China Power Grid witnessed the highest demand for 43.9 million kilowatt/hours, an increase of 3.4 million kilowatt/hours year-on-year, while the South China Power Grid supplied 36.05 million kilowatt/hours, an increase of 6 million kilowatt/hours over the same month last year. Tan attributed the skyrocketing rise to rapid economic expansion and booming fixed asset investment.
