China's top tourism official has given the thumbs up to the country's first overseas-financed travel agency. Whilst on a visit to Japan, He Weiguang, the director of the China National Tourism Administration, announced that the newly-established Jalpak International Company had got approval to operate out of Beijing.
Jalpak is a subsidiary of Japanese Airlines and is expected to open by the end of the year. Its main business will come from organizing China tours for Japanese tourist groups.
The introduction of a foreign-financed travel agency into the market is seen as beneficial for China's tourism industry. Jalpak will cooperate with Chinese travel agencies through improving services and stimulating the market.
China has authorized foreign investors to apply to establish foreign-funded travel agencies beginning on July 12, marking a new phase in the Chinese tourism sector in line with its membership of the World Trade Organization.
