Chinese cigarette lighter producers, mostly private enterprises in Wenzhou of Zhejiang Province, have almost won an anti-dumping suit filed by their counterparts in the European Union.
The European Union has sent a notice to the Association of Lighter Producers in Wenzhou, saying that the federation of lighter producers in Europe has withdrawn its anti-dumping suit against the Chinese producers. The notice says the EU will issue a ruling accordingly if the Chinese plants raise no objections to the withdrawal.
At the request of European lighter producers, the EU announced on June 28, 2002, the launch of an anti-dumping investigation into lighters from China and Southeast Asian countries. Chinese lighter producers answered the charge and cooperated with EU investigators, who, after a field study, agreed that the production costs of Wenzhou lighter producers is genuinely low.
