China's telecom industry hit a high note in the first half of the year, earning revenues of 220 billion yuan, or 26 billion US dollars, up 12 percent year on year. Experts attribute the sustained growth to strong domestic demand and the government's strenuous efforts to standardize the market.
Statistics form the Ministry of Information Industry show, the value added by the industry in 2002 exceeded 130 billion yuan, or 16 billion US dollars, up 19 percent over the same period of the prior year.
China recruited 52 million new telephone subscribers in the first half of the year, boosting its total number of subscribers to 472 million.
Mobile telecommunication is a major driving force for the industry. They accounted for close to half of total revenue in the first six months of the year.
Internet usage has also boomed. The number of the Internet users reached 68 million in the first half of the year.
Six major telecom operators dominate the Chinese market, with China mobile holding 37 percent, and China Telecom having 31 percent market share.
However, analysts are still calling for more effective supervision to promote the market's orderly progress. They believe telecom-related laws and regulations should be implemented to make the market fairer. And telecom operators should do more to tap the growing rural market.
