Rolls-Royce has opened a showroom in the heart of Hong Kong. The automaker also rolled out its latest model, the Phantom, at the opening ceremony on Wednesday. As one of Asia's richest cities, Hong Kong has always been a key market for the British carmaker.
Hong Kong is famous for having the most Rolls-Royce's per capita in the world. A total of 1,350 of the luxury cars are registered in the region. Wednesday's move by the British automaker is a sign of the company's continued confidence in the city's appetite for its product.
Howard Mosher, sales & marketing director of Rolls-Royce, said, "We expected Asia Pacific will be about 20 percent of our total volume around the world, and China perhaps half of that. The show will be, of course, for the new model Phantom. We'll be introducing the car there as well, so progressively over the rest of this year, we'll be introducing cars for that market and show them for demonstration and to fill customers’ orders as they are received."
Star of the opening was the new Rolls-Royce Phantom. Powered by a specially developed 6.75 liter, V-12 engine, the new Rolls-Royce can waft from standstill to 60 miles per hour in 5.7 seconds. It has a top speed of 149 miles per hour. Under the skin is an aluminum space-frame body that is both light and incredibly strong.
Rolls-Royce also plans to open showrooms in Beijing, Guangzhou and Shanghai in August.
