Beijing is planning to build eight passenger transport hubs to ease traffic congestion and provide convenient transfer points for bus passengers.
The Beijing Zoo Transport Hub now under construction will serve up to 15 bus lines and be mainly responsible for the transfer of bus passengers. It will enable passengers commuting in western Beijing to make easier transfers.
Yao Guangxin, project manager of Beijing Zoo Transport Hub, said, "Construction of the project is progressing smoothly. We have completed 60 percent of the project and expect to complete it ahead of the scheduled time of next May."
The Xizhimen Transport Hub is the biggest of its kind now under construction in Beijing. When it is completed, passengers will be able to switch to trains, light rail, subway and buses inside the hub.
Other transport centers being constructed include the Dongzhimen Transport Hub which connects the Express Railway leading to the Capital Airport. Its transferring hall was put into operation early this year.
Beijing plans to invest 7.7 billion US dollars by 2008 to improve urban transport infrastructure. Part of the funds are being used with an aim to put all eight transport hubs into operation by 2005.
