Days of scorching temperatures have put China's power grids to an un-precedented test. The sudden nationwide run on electric power is forcing government agencies to coordinate very carefully to ensure that ordinary citizens can be kept supplied with power, while key industries are able to keep operating.
The State Power Coordinating Center reports that most of regional power grids in central and east China are finding it difficult to meet the surging demands. On Friday, nine provinces and cities were forced to partially cut supplies, or impose curbs on power consumption.
Given the grim situation, power companies are digging deep for more generating capacity, while government agencies are turning to inter-grid coordination, to optimize the power distribution and supply. Meanwhile authorities have introduced flexible work hours and a new pricing structure to curb peak-hour demand and encourage off-peak power consumption.
