Beijing expands power supply for 2008 Olympics

The Beijing municipal government has approved the construction of five power plants, to satisfy increased power needs expected in the city during the Olympic period.

Projections for the capital indicate power consumption in 2008 will double the 2002 level to reach 67 billion kilowatts. Plans to meet this demand are already well underway. Datang Technologies expects its latest plant in Inner Mongolia to go online later in August. Datang is Beijing's biggest electricity supplier. The new plant has six units capable of generating 3.6 million kilowatts.

However, more than two thirds of Beijing's power is supplied by neighboring provinces. So, one urgent task facing electricity authorities is connecting the capital's grid to the power supply in these provinces.

"By the end of this year, Beijing will be linked into the grid covering northeast China. In the next two or three years, we will also connect Beijing to the grids covering Shandong Province and central China," said Luan Jun, deputy general manager of North China Power Group.

To cope with the expanded capacity, the city is building a series of sub-stations in suburban areas. Two transformers with a capacity of 10 million kilovolts are already online. Beijing plans to build another 81 high-voltage transformers in the next five years.
