For fishermen in Hong Kong and Macao, fishing outside the waters of neighbouring Guangdong Province will soon cease to be a problem. A special coordination group has been set up to deal with the related issues.

Since the establishment of the People's Republic of China half a century ago, fishermen in the Hong Kong and Macao regions have been required to fish within the waters of Guangdong Province. But the use of bigger fishing boats in the last decade has created an urgent demand for fishing in the waters of the neighboring province of Hainan, as well as in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

To solve the problems fishermen are facing there, the Ministry of Agriculture has set up a special coordination group, including members from related government agencies in the region.

During the first meeting of the coordination group recently, officials and experts decided to take measures to help and support the fishermen in various policy and financial areas. These measures include developing deep-sea fishing, sea farming, recreational fishing, and tourism. The group has also suggested a two-month reduction, or exemption of related fees.
