People's Daily, China's leading newspaper, carries an editorial Friday hailing the success of the 16th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) held in Beijing on November 8-14.

"The congress is a united, victorious, and highly progressive one," the editorial says.

Jiang Zemin's report, with the theme "to hold high the great banner of Deng Xiaoping Theory, fully act on the important thought of Three Represents, carry forward our cause into the future, keep pace with the times, build a well-off society in an all-round way, speed up socialist modernization and work hard to create a new situation in building socialism with Chinese characteristics," accords with the trends of the times and represents the common aspiration of the entire Party and Chinese people, it says.

"The report was approved unanimously by CPC delegates to the congress and has got support from the entire Party and Chinese people," the editorial says.

It says that the congress spoke highly of the achievements the Party and Chinese people scored over the past 13 years in reform, development and stability, domestic and foreign affairs and national defense and in running the Party, state and army.

The week-long congress, the editorial says, has epoch-making significance because it has established the important thought of Three Represents as the Party's guiding ideology, on a par with Marxism-Leninism, Mao Zedong Thought and Deng Xiaoping Theory.

The congress has set the goal of building a well-off society in an all-round way and to this end made overall arrangements for China's economic, political, and cultural development and restructuring, which is of great significance to gathering the forces of the Party and people as well as accelerating socialist modernization, the editorial says.

A group of politically integrated and professionally competent and younger leading cadres have been elected members of the new CPC Central Committee, demonstrating that the Party is flourishing and that the Party has worthy successors to carry on its cause, the editorial adds.

The editorial says that the whole Party and Chinese people will remember the historic contributions made by those who no longer hold their posts in the 16th CPC Central Committee.

The editorial calls on all Party members and Chinese people to rally around the CPC Central Committee and firmly uphold the Party's basic theories, line, program and experience.

"Let's strive to forge ahead with the cause of building socialism with Chinese characteristics," it says.
