Chinese President Hu Jintao met ROK President Roh Moo-hyun

    Chinese President Hu Jintao met with visiting Republic of Korean President Roh Moo-hyun Monday afternoon. China promised to continue playing a constructive role in the DPRK nuclear crisis. The two sides also expressed hopes to double the trade volume in five years.

    During the talks, the two new leaders reviewed the past decade's bilateral relations . They both agreed that links between the two sides have developed rapidly and fruitfully, and that there is great potential in future ties .

    Hu Jintao said that the ties between the two nations have brought substantial benefit to both peoples and made significant contributions to regional peace. In the new century, he added that the goal of building comprehensive co-operative relations will open a new chapter in the two countries' friendship.

    He also expressed hopes that the annual trade volume will reach 100 billion US dollars in five years. At present, it is around 40 billion US dollars.

    On the crisis shadowing the Korean peninsula, Hu Jintao reiterated China's stance. He promised to continue playing a constructive role in resolving the issue.

    Roh Moo-hyun spoke highly of China's hosting of an initial round of talks between China, the DPRK and the US in April.

    The ROK side also offered to provide assistance to Beijing for the 2008 Olympic Games and to Shanghai for the 2010 World Expo.

    Roh Moo-hyun is on his first visit to China since he assumed the presidency in February.

    Prior to their talks, Chinese President Hu Jintao held a welcoming ceremony Monday afternoon at the Great Hall of the People.

    The ROK President arrived in Beijing Monday morning. His delegation includes the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Energy Yoon Jin-sik and Minister of Information and Communication Chin Dae-je.

    The ROK President will spend two nights in Beijing and then complete his China visit with a tour of China's economic and commercial hub of Shanghai. South Korean media has widely reported that their President's trip is aimed at seeking Beijing's full co-operation in persuading Pyongyang to give up its nuclear ambitions. And also, with 30 businesspeople accompanying President Roh , the trip is also seen as an important opportunity to boost bilateral economic ties.
