China has successfully realized the UN's goal of reducing its poverty-stricken population by half. The outgoing representative of the UN Development Program Kerstin Leitner said on Tuesday that she was pleased to witness China's progress in poverty relief and sustainable development during her 5-year tenure.
Leitner said China is striving to accomplish most of the UN's Millenium Development Goals set out in 2000, which range from halving the poor population to halting HIV/AIDS spread.
She said she was particularly impressed by the government's efforts to feed and clothe its population, educate women and increase awareness of law in the rural areas.
Leitner said that a gap still exists between the cities and countryside in China, and the UNDP will continue its aid to China in eradicating poverty and maintaining sustainable development.
