There is a flood emergency at the Jingjiagou section of the Huaihe River in Huaiyuan County of east China's Anhui Province. After more torrential rain in the upper reaches, the water level of the Huaihe River has begun to climb again after falling for two days.
The emergency occurred at 7:50am Wednesday, when the river breached its bank at the Jingjiagou section of Huaihe River.
More than 2000 soldiers from the People's Liberation Army and Armed Police are on flood control duty and they took immediate action to slow down the speed of the overflow -- building a semi-circular dam to reinforce the main river bank.
By zero hour on Thursday, additional 700 strong PLA troops were on their way to the emergency scene.
Meanwhile, the flood peak of the Huaihe River mainstream reached Hongze Lake in east China's Jiangsu Province. The water level there rose rapidly, creating huge pressure on the banks. Accordingly, the Huaihe River flood control office decided to increase the floodwater discharge capacity of the sluice gates along the river. They managed to get the water levels down from 14.14 meters at 8am to 14.11 meters at 6pm.
